I woke up early this morning to see that Danon sent out an e-mail to Pam Slater-Price and her Chief of Staff, John Weil, regarding the County’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Program (NRP).
The email was brief and had a nice long letter in PDF format attached to it.
In the e-mail Danon states:
Dear Chairwoman Slater-Price,
Attached is a letter from me regarding reforms to the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program for your review. As you know, the San Diego Board of Supervisors will be taking board action on this program on Tuesday, March 23. It is Item 18, the “Reduction in FY 2010-11 Appropriations to The Neighborhood Reinvestment Program.”
If you should have any questions, please feel free to call me at (858) 774-1290.
Thank you in advance for your attention.
Steve Danon

This guy has balls. It is good to see someone speaking up for the taxpayers who are starting to perceive the Board of Supervisor’s legit NRP program as being abused by specific Supervisors. In his letter, Danon hits it home that he is a fighter for public safety and that he won’t stand by to see Pam Slater-Price cut critical programs that serves our taxpayers while continuing to funnel funding through the NRP to organizations that are definitely not a higher priority over the needs of our common hard working taxpayers.
Danon provides two good solid ideas for the Board of supervisors to consider: (1) Gift Bans from organizations that receive funding from the NRP and (2) a NRP Committee composed of citizens appointed by the Supervisors, which would ensure transparency of the whole allocation process of funding through the NRP program. This would in turn eliminate the bad press and perception that the legit NRP program is receiving from the public due to specific supervisors having very different priorities compared to the common taxpayer.
I like Danon’s ideas and hope the Board of Supervisors will take up Danon’s recommendations. A copy of the full PDF letter is

Young Dem Jason Everitt is kicking off his campaign for the Escondido City Council this weekend. Jason is joining a line of high quality young dems running for office during the 2010 cycle. First it was both Patrick Finucane and David Alvarez for their respective City of SD City Council seats and now Jason has thrown his hat in.
Everitt has been making the rounds in the community and you can catch him on Twitter and FB. He appears to be taking his time talking to common voters instead of trying to be a splashy candidate to compensate for his age.
His campaign sent out a press release touting his campaign kick off this weekend. I was impressed by his campaign logo. Very bold. Check it out on top of his press release. I think this is a sign of good things to come out of his BOLD campaign as a young leader ready to contribute to improving our neighborhoods and communities throughout San Diego county. I will be covering more of his campaign and doing some follow ups on the Alvarez and Finucane campaigns because these guys are the future of our party. Hopefully we will see some more young candidates emerge to carry the torch for our party in the 2010 election cycle.

Tracy Emblem has come a long way since her crappy campaign launch. Who can forget that first website that looked like a website from the 1990′s.
But she is looking better and better by the week. Francine Busby, the leading Dem for the primary to take on Brian Bilbray this fall, has been around but she hasn’t made as much noise as Emblem has. Tracy has been increasing the tempo of her campaign and it shows.
However tonight she posted something clever on her daughter/campaign manager’s Facebook page:
Not much difference between Busby & Bilbray — Both start with “B”
and end with “Y” and both share the same middle initial of “P” — They could be called Busbray?
Tracy is smarter than I thought. The gloves are starting to come off and now that it is almost March and June is right around the corner. I am looking forward to seeing how Tracy will frame the choice between herself and Busbray Busby. Busby is a revered figure within the party but she definitely has lost her luster with the Tracy constantly lurking in Busby’s shadows. A lot of the credit goes to her campaign manager, Erin, who definitely knows what she is doing. Young campaign managers, if knowledgeable, are a good thing for upstart campaigns. I worked with Erin back in 2002 when we were both interns in Susan Davis’ DC office. I enjoyed working with her and came away impressed with her. I never saw her again until the Labor 101 meeting last year when I recognized her instantly and figured Tracy just might have a fighting chance after all. The odds were stacked against her but Tracy and Erin have pushed hard and now I am definitely eager to see the race heat up between Tracy and Busbray Busby.

You may have noticed that I have been on a long break from the blog since December.
It got really quiet in December and I got bored of the blog’s layout. I started seeking out a new layout and when tinkering with it during winter break, I accidentally shut down the site completely and haven’t been able to put the old site back up.
I decided not to try to fix anything until I could come up with a new look for the site and I feel satisfied that I have found the look that I want this blog to reflect.
For those of you who know me, I love analyzing politics and looking at races from all sides. I want to focus mostly on writing about political strategy in local races and move away from repeating press releases or information passed on from campaigns. I have invited several people to write for this blog and write in their own words of what is going on with several campaigns they are working on. I want to diversify the content on this blog. The first time I did this blog, there were only three writers. I wrote at least 95% of the content and I felt burned out and unmotivated. Hopefully this time I will be a small contributor part of a large democratic base of local bloggers keeping the rest of the community informed of what is happening with our candidates so we can support them. If you are interested in blogging for this website, please do not hesistate to contact me at pepe@bluesd.com. I would love to have as many bloggers contribute to this website!
I look forward to seeing this blog grow again as election season heats up!
