The SDUT had a good brief write up on the recent debate between candidates for the D6 seat.
It was nice but only shows how boring the candidates are. I like Howard Wayne but Wayne and the rest of the field don’t excite me. I can imagine how difficult it is going to be for D6 voters to vote in June after 9 long years of boasting that Frye was their woman at City Hall. It will be a somber moment at the ballot booth when voters realize they have to vote between who and who?
Ryan Huckabone and Lori Zapf are the GOP candidates. Huckabone won’t be a solid candidate if he really thinks that D6 voters want to hear someone tell them that it is important to bring a Superbowl back to SD instead of filling up all the gaping potholes on Gennesee Ave. He will be in for a surprise in June. Lori Zapf seems nice. Why is it that when the GOP has a chance to pick up a seat they fail to field good candidates? I seriously thought they would aggressively contest this seat. A lot has changed the past 9 years. Back in 2001, the GOP put forward Steve Danon, who is now a candidate for the Board of Supervisors. He was a stellar candidate and Donna fought tooth and nail to beat him. Now this time around Huckabone and Zapf are no Steve Danon. But this bodes well for our party of course. It will be nice having the D6 seat in our column for the next four years. There is no way the GOP will make any gains in the SD City Council this Fall. D2 stays in GOP column while D4/D8 are solid DEM. D6 was the only swing district and the GOP is serving the seat on a platter to our party.
The real race is between Howard Wayne and Steve Hadley. Originally it appeared to be going in Wayne’s direction but with the rulings regarding campaign financing on the local level, it appears that Hadley might be able to make up the fundraising gap. How so? Don’t forget that Steve Francis is a Hadley supporter. And everyone knows Steve Francis wants to run for Mayor in 2012 so he might be willing to spend nice wads of cash to set up a committee separately to help elect Hadley so he can have a councilmember to count on for an endorsement in 2012. This isn’t such a far-fetched idea. Howard Wayne is no Bruce Wayne and wouldn’t be able to counter a Steve Francis funded political committee. If this scenario plays out then you can expect this race to become much more exciting than the slow show-stopper that it is right now.

I know there are at least 7 in the running for this seat. If you are going to blog at least get it right.
vern- I am pretty sure I got it right. I spent 24 of the last 27 years of my life in D6 and know the district like the back of my hand. The only candidate I left out was Kathy Tran. I figured she would be running eventually since she runs for everything that overlaps in Linda Vista. Saw a yard sign for Tran in Linda Vista this week. There is no official 7th candidate. If I am wrong then contact the “seventh” candidate and tell them to legally file with the city clerk’s office because as of today there are only 7 legit candidates that have filed with the city clerk.
Pepe:
I too know the District which is wny I may have been a little short with my comment. I apologize. But, probably best that you Check the Clerks website. I have attached a link for convenience. It seems Kim Tran, not Kathy is the candidate your talking aobut. Also Eva Stresemann is runnng too. I saw a bunch Kim Tran signs in business storefronts windows along Linda Vista/Convoy and on Clairmont Mesa Blvd. Seems like she has a lot of small business supporters. I found that odd since the the republican Endorsed candidate usually has the business commuity behind them. I think the candidates donations are on-line too at the clerks office. I will look to see if I can find the link and I will pass it on to you. I would think they would clarify what special interests groups are supporting which candidates
